Comet Tsuchinshan ATLAS Eaglehawk Neck Tasmania

Comet Tsuchinshan-ATLAS (C/2023 A3)

Comet Tsuchinshan-ATLAS (C/2023 A3) is making a buzz (figuratively not literally!) as it appears in the pre-dawn skies these past few weeks, and I was able to capture it at Eaglehawk Neck on October 3.

This image was captured with the Astro Tracer, which allowed me to shoot for 30 seconds without the comet/stars trailing. The comet was not visible to the naked eye due to the pre dawn twilight but was a fantastic sight in camera, rivalling Comet Leonard from December 2021.

This comet is one of the brighter ones of recent times, with predictions it may brighten even further. It is going to disappear from view for the next week or so (as it is too close to the sun to see) but should be visible after sunset from October 14 – I’ll be sure to head out again then!

For those interested, there’s a bit more info on the ABC news website.
