Philosopher Falls

Philosopher Falls is a simply stunning rainforest walk allowing visitors to really experience Tasmania’s Tarkine rainforest in all its glory.

Philosopher Falls Track

There is a nicely constructed track through some truly beautiful rainforest, complete with moss covered myrtles, tree ferns and of course an army of tiny autumn fungi which appear to devour the litter of the forest floor every autumn.

Fungi Tarkine Rainforest Tasmania

Fungi of all shapes, sizes and colour appears everywhere in autumn, including the Philosopher Falls track

After a gentle downhill walk of 15 minutes or so you cross the Arthur River – which is a small stream this close to its headwaters. On the other side of the river the track follows an old water race dating back to the mining days of yesteryear. This part of the track is basically flat, although it must be said, wet and in places a little muddy. This shouldn’t be a deterrent however, the rainforest looks its best in the glistening rain!

The last section is a steel staircase which takes you to a viewing platform looking out through the ferns to the impressive drop of Philosopher Falls. All in all it takes less than 30 minutes one way, but it is the kind of track that really deserves hours of your time – especially those of you visiting with cameras!

The last section of the track is this well made staircase to the viewing platform. Only a short – but steep! – descent.

Philosopher Falls Photography Tours

I run quite a few photography tours that include a visit to Philosopher Falls such as my 5 day Tarkine Tour and also as part of my 4 day Cradle Mountain Tour. It can also be added as part of my private 3 day Cradle Mountain tour if you like. Philosopher Falls are around 50 minutes from Cradle Mountain and well worth the short drive. Bookings are always open for my tours, contact me to book a place!
